The Ultimate Surrender
One of the most captivating rituals during the Rath Yatra is the Chhera Pahanra. Before the massive chariots are pulled by millions of devotees, the Gajapati Maharaja (the King of Puri) arrives in a palanquin to perform a uniquely humbling service.
Sweeping the Chariots
The King, adorned in royal attire, climbs aboard each chariot. He is handed a gold-handled broom by the servitors.
"With sandalwood water sprinkled on the floor of the chariot, the King sweeps the deck where the Lord sits, wiping away not just dust, but the ego of kingship."
This ritual beautifully demonstrates the core of Jagannath Tattva: before the Supreme Lord, everyone is a servant. The King, despite his worldly power, publicly declares himself as the foremost Sevaka (servant) of Lord Jagannath. It sets a profound example for the devotees - true devotion begins with absolute humility.
