The Grand Festival
The Rath Yatra (Chariot Festival) is perhaps the most famous of all festivals associated with Lord Jagannath. Occurring annually in the month of Ashadha, it marks the journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra from the main temple to their aunt's house, the Gundicha Temple.
The Chariots
The deities travel on three colossal, newly constructed wooden chariots:
- Nandighosha: The chariot of Lord Jagannath, draped in red and yellow.
- Taladhwaja: The chariot of Lord Balabhadra, draped in red and green.
- Darpadalana: The chariot of Devi Subhadra, draped in red and black.
"The construction of the chariots is a marvel of traditional engineering, built entirely without metal nails, using precise interlocking wooden joints."
Spiritual Significance
The Rath Yatra is unique because it is the only time when the deities leave the sanctum sanctorum to meet the masses. In orthodox tradition, entry to the temple was restricted, but during Rath Yatra, the Lord comes out to the Grand Road (Bada Danda) to bless everyone indiscriminately, regardless of caste, creed, or religion. It symbolizes the ultimate compassion of the Supreme, tearing down the walls of the temple to embrace the world.
