The Jagannath Tattva: An Overview

The Supreme Philosophy
The Jagannath Tattva is a complex syncretism of various traditions, integrating tribal roots, Vaishnavism, Shaivism, Shaktism, and Buddhism into a unified theology. At its core, it represents the highest realization of the Supreme Being—the Lord of the Universe.
"He is the ultimate refuge of all beings, transcending form and formlessness."
The Daru Brahma
The unique wooden form of the deities—Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra—is known as Daru Brahma (the Supreme Reality manifested in wood). Unlike traditional metal or stone idols, the wooden form signifies life, decay, and the eternal cycle of renewal (Nabakalebara).
Universal Brotherhood
One of the most striking aspects of the Tattva is its emphasis on equality. Inside the temple, the strict caste rules prevalent in ancient times were historically suspended when sharing the Mahaprasad. This radical approach to devotion makes Jagannath a truly universal deity.
