Historical Origins of the Cult
The Tribal Roots
Historically, Lord Jagannath is believed to have originated as a tribal deity known as Neelamadhaba, worshipped by the Sabara tribe chief Viswavasu. The deep connection to tribal origins is still maintained today through the Daitapatis, the servitors who consider themselves descendants of the original tribal worshippers.
The Construction of the Temple
The current monumental structure of the Shree Mandira was initiated by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva in the 12th century and completed by his descendants.
The architecture is a marvel of the Kalinga style, with the main spire (Shikhara) towering over the landscape.
The evolution of the cult reflects a fascinating journey of synthesis, adopting elements from Jainism (the concept of the triad) and Buddhism (some scholars link the triad to Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha).
