Snana Yatra: The Grand Bathing Festival

The Divine Bath
Occurring on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Jyeshtha, Snana Yatra is considered to be the birthday of Lord Jagannath. It is a massive public festival where the deities are brought out of the sanctum to the Snana Mandapa (Bathing Platform).
The 108 Pots of Water
The deities are ceremonially bathed with exactly 108 pots of herbal and fragrant water drawn from the Suna Kua (Golden Well), which is opened only once a year specifically for this ritual.
"Following the heavy bath, the deities are adorned in the Hati Besha (Elephant Attire), a tradition said to have originated to satisfy a devotee of Lord Ganesha."
Anasara: The Divine Fever
Because of the prolonged exposure to the cold water, the deities "fall ill." For the next 15 days, known as the Anasara period, they are kept in a secret sickroom. They are offered no regular food, only herbal medicines (Phuluri Tela and Dasamula Pachana) administered by the Daitapatis. This human-like vulnerability is one of the most endearing aspects of the Jagannath cult.
